I had the pleasure of meeting Gary at the Vaynermedia offices in NYC with one mission: to try and get to know him, to find out who the real Gary is behind brand Gary V: the man who loves his family (and the Jets).

I love my mom. I am who I am today because of her, no question. She helped mold my personality, my love of conversation, of storytelling, of reading; even of podcasts. I can remember laying down on the living room floor with her as a little kid and listening to old time radio show recordings such as Jack Benny, Groucho Marx, or even the infamous War of the Worlds.
I love my mom. One of her greatest gifts to me is my love of soccer (football to the rest of the world). She gave me my lifetime talisman when I was about five years old. It is a small glass sun catcher, a soccer player chasing after a ball. It hung in my room on the lamp next to my bed throughout my entire life at home. It was the first thing I saw every morning. It (and she) inspired me to start playing soccer. And I’ve never lost my love for the game. Even after being an Arsenal fan for so many years.
Gary Vaynerchuk loves his mom. And he isn’t shy about this whatsoever. He has told the story multiple times of how his immigrant mother Tamara hand made him a New York Jet’s jersey when he was five years old to help him “fit in” to his new American home. Gary’s mom shaped him into the success he is today across all of his many ventures and media projects. And yes, Gary still has the jersey. And he wants to buy the Jets one day. Just ask him.

This interview is an attempt to talk with the real Gary Vaynerchuk, not Gary V. And, in the end, for the most part they are one and the same.
I love my mom. She passed away from complications of Multiple Sclerosis back in 1992. But her influence on my life has never died. That soccer talisman of mine hangs in my son’s Eli’s room, on the lamp next to his bed. It is the first thing he see’s every morning. I hope Gary hangs that Jet’s jersey his mom made in his son or daughter’s room.
