Leda Writes: The hard currency of bankers’ feelings
Every Thursday, Leda Glyptis, 11:FS Chief of Staff creates #LedaWrites. This week she turns her attention to Wonder Woman, technology without heart and why love is key to innovation.
Technology without heart destroys us. In addition to being a particularly good Wonder Woman quote, it’s also helpful in understanding what’s core to innovation, transformation, digital discovery and the pain of changing that comes with that.
Money.
That’s the thing that’s at the heart of it all. If the answer to ‘will this new app or great tool make the business money?’ is ‘no’ then it’s technology without heart. And doing that will destroy the business.
Of course, it’s not just about money. The reason that tool or app got that far in the first place is that it travelled the path of least resistance, because it pleased the most people and appealed to the lowest common denominator in the body corporate.
Feelings definitely have their place in the process. Money might be the heart of the matter but without love the projects that are churned out will be something for someone else to track, for someone else to care about, fall short in scope and tightly bound for damage limitation.
Instead of wasting time, energy and money on projects that no-one will believe in, no-one will love and no-one will fight for, chase the ideas that bring out your passion. Spend time thinking about the ideas that’ll be driven by your passion and belief in them.
Don’t cautiously hedge your bets in the hope that if you wait long enough the universe will unveil the secrets of the future. It won’t. Nothing ever works that way. More than that, it’ll destroy you, by taking you nowhere in the slowest and most expensive way possible.
