Every Thursday, Leda Glyptis, 11:FS Chief of Staff creates #LedaWrites. This week she turns her attention to career tips for optimists, curious cats and rebels…and auntie Mabel.

Everyone has an auntie Mabel in their life. Someone who goes out of their way to cut down every accomplishment. Whether you didn’t go down a career path they approve of or accomplished something so alien to them they dismiss it. People who only measure success by what they understand. It’s easy to ignore that person in your personal life, but what do you do when you work for auntie Mabel?

No-one ever told us how to deal with the naysayers in our jobs, which can be frustrating when there are so many in banking. People who over analyse everything until they find a flaw. And crucially, people who won’t tell you how to improve but will only ever belittle you. The truth is there’s no value in fighting these people. They will never change. Not because they can’t, but because they don’t want to.

So stand your ground, but don’t expect to win. Fight the losing fight so everyone else can see who you are, then leave. Playing their game is a waste of your life. If it’s not a game you want to play, get out.
