Most career talks have one thing in common, speakers try to turn their life story into a roadmap. It doesn’t work. Life doesn’t give people stories of linear ascent and anyone who thinks it does is kidding themselves.
No-one’s career path can be copied. Career planning no longer exists in the same way it did in previous generations. By the numbers career progression through longevity is fading away and the metrics behind usefulness are changing.
What matters now is staying curious, chasing the big questions behind the purpose of a function, a feature or a team. That curiosity will keep you relevant. And a healthy dose of impatience when others throw delaying tactics your way will keep you from making the wrong choices.
The best way to invest in your career is to create a network that trusts you. That’s not five minutes with someone you met at a conference. It’s the people you work with every day. The people who know how you react when you’re stressed out and see what you stand for, or don’t, on a daily basis. Your peers are the network who know how you work. They’re the ones who’ll call you when they’ve moved on up with the offer you wanted. Be a good colleague and you’ll get ahead.
